10 things you should know about getting married

1. Your proposal — and wedding — may not be magical.

Your proposal and wedding day will undoubtedly be special and memorable. But there’s a caveat: You’ve spent so much time building up each moment in your head that when those moments come, they may be as awkward and un-perfect as any first-time experience, says Meredith Bodgas, weddings blogger at Merital Bliss. Relax — the “flaws” in your stories will end up being your favorite parts to recount.

2. A short engagement is a good idea if…

You’re a high-stress person who knows she’ll agonize over the details down to the last minute, changing your guest list, or refusing to make the final call on your flowers, your bridesmaid dresses, etc. Spare yourself the anxiety — and the flip-flopping — and get married sooner.

3. You might consider a longer engagement if…

You’re searching for a home while trying to plan a wedding, you have a baby, or you’re involved in any other highly time-consuming life commitments. Wedding planning takes up a lot of evenings and weekends, and if you’re going to be stretching yourself beyond your limits or actively reducing the quality of your life to get married sooner, reconsider your target date — for a better wedding and your sanity.

4. Once you choose a wedding date, stick to it.

“Your wedding date is the first anniversary you pick yourself, so you want to make sure you get it right,” Fusaro says. “So go ahead and take your time selecting the perfect date.” But don’t change it! It’s a big deal if you ask the members of your wedding party, who’ve requested time off and may also be involved in other friends’ weddings, to shift the date — if you switch to a different weekend, they may not even be available

5. Don’t go shopping for your wedding dress without doing these three key things.

First, be certain you really, truly know your budget so you won’t try on a dress you can’t ultimately afford. Second, make sure you know your venue so you’ll pick an appropriate dress. And third, pick your company wisely. (DON’T go with an entourage — too many opinions will drive you crazy.)

6. When wedding planning, get everything in writing.

Prevent nasty wedding budget surprises by getting all arrangements on paper. Reiterate oral agreements, especially with vendors who might not give you a contract, like your makeup artist, to make sure everyone’s on the same page and to ensure everyone stays honest.

7. Relax the day of your wedding.

You’ve been stressed for months, so take this one day for yourself and trust that you’ve made all the right decisions — and let everyone else handle the hiccups

8. You’ll find out things about him you didn’t know before…

What is the ‘meaning’ behind many of the wedding traditions?

Did you ever wonder how the tradition of the bride and groom kissing at the end of the ceremony ever come about?  (It’s not what you think.)  Why was rice thrown after the ceremony?  Why does a bride carry a bouquet?

These are just some of the traditions that just about every wedding observes but do you know the meaning behind these traditions.  Well, if you are curious, read on!

Traditionally, rice was thrown after the ceremony to signify, are you ready, FERTILITY.

White wedding cakes symbolize what?  That’s right, FERTILITY.

Flower girls represent what at a wedding?  You might recognize a theme right now, it’s FERTILITY.

Why do brides and grooms kiss at the end of the ceremony?  No, it’s not about FERTILITY (although kissing may play a part in that later), it’s because in old Roman times, the belief was that the bride and groom exchanged a piece of their souls during the kiss.

Why does the bride carry a bouquet?  Again, in old Roman times (do you know any old Romans?) the belief was that the bouquet ‘warded off evil spirits.’

The ‘art’ of giving a good wedding toast

 

Toasts have been a part of wedding celebrations for hundreds of years, possibly one of the oldest wedding traditions.  How many times have you been to a wedding and the toasts were great?  They were probably more along the lines of boring or worse embarrassing.   One of the secrets to a good toast is being prepared.  ‘Winging it’, unless you are a professional comedian, generally doesn’t work (and professional comedians very rarely ‘wing it,’ what appears to you, in a performance, as a spontaneous remark has actually been rehearsed many times to sound ‘spontaneous.’)

Jill and Ryan Scott’s wedding and reception

Jill and Ryan Scott’s wedding and reception were held at Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff on Saturday, July 7, 2012.  The ceremony was held outside amongst the pines of the golf course and the reception was held in the banquet room of the clubhouse.   They had such fun guests that the guests were spontaneously doing the ‘wave’ BEFORE the grand entrance of the wedding party.  We provided the sound system for the ceremony and the emceeing and musical entertainment for the reception.  Other vendors working with us at this event were, of course, the staff at Forest Highlands Golf Club, Amanda from Butterfly Petals provided the beautiful flower arrangements for both the ceremony and reception, Jared Harrison of Shutterbooths of Arizona provided the photo booth and the photographers were Robin and Renee of The R2 Studio.

It was a fun event, congratulations, Ryan and Jill, we wish you many years of happiness in your new life together.

10 Ways to Make Sure Your Wedding Isn’t Boring

Want to keep ‘the fun’ in your wedding?  Listed below are 10 ways in which you can use to keep things fun and lively at your reception.

1. Make introductions at the rehearsal.

A wedding brings together two families and two sets of friends.  The last thing a bride and groom want is for a big group of people who don’t know each other very well (or at all) to attempt awkward small talk while waiting for the bride and groom to make their way into the reception.  A good way to solve this problem is to invite family and friends to the rehearsal dinner to break the ice BEFORE the big day.  The second time they see each other will be like old home week for them.

2. Stick to your schedule

No one expects things to run with military precision but you don’t want to force your guests to idle around while you take your after ceremony pictures.  This is where the cocktail hour comes in handy.  Set up a lounge or shady courtyard for your guests to mingle and equip the area with snacks, drinks, plenty of of places to sit  and even some background music to set the mood  and keep the party atmosphere alive.

3. Don’t let your guests go hungry during the cocktail hour

Two words, hors d’oeuvres.  Even if you plan on having a full meal at the reception, it’s a good idea to have a few snacks available for your guests to munch on during the cocktail hour.  You don’t want them to get too hungry (read: cranky) or too drunk while waiting for you to finish up your pictures.

4. Plan an exit strategy

If you really want guests to be able to enjoy themselves at your reception, arrange for transportation to get them safely home afterward.  Some couples choose to hold their reception in a hotel banquet hall and block off rooms for the guests (this will also help keep your guests around to the end of the reception) while others hire a shuttle service to run throughout the night.  This consideration gives your guests the freedom to relax (read: drink) without worrying about getting home safely when the party is over.

5. Consider your venue

Of course, your budget will be a deciding factor in determining where you hold your reception but selecting an interesting reception site can go a long way toward keeping your guests entertained.  Many museums rent out their exhibit areas for things such as weddings and zoos often have banquet areas with full view of the animals.  Even in an otherwise bland reception space you can ‘dress up’ the decor with things such as accent lighting or a photo booth or a custom image projection.

6. Work you seating chart

There’s nothing more uncomfortable than being the one couple at a table where you don’t know anyone and everyone else went to high school together–particularly if you can see friends having a good time five tables away.  A well thought out seating arrangement is an easy (and cheap) way to make sure your guests spend time with people they like and have similar interests.  You may be even able to set them up with someone new!

7. Put a time limit on toasts

Yes. it’s fun to hear ‘stories’ about you from your friends and family but unless your friends and family are professional comedians, an overly long toast can go from sentimental to painful very quickly.  Limit the amount of toasts to a few key members (Best Man, Maid of Honor, Mom or Dad.)

8. Bring in the …….clowns?

Remember the scary clown/magician from your eighth birthday party?  Today’s speciality performers are nothing like that.  The options for wedding (cocktail & dinner) entertainment span from an interactive DJ to balloon animal artists to belly dancers to singing waiters–these people are PROS at making sure weddings aren’t boring.

9. Think beyond wedding cake

Wedding cakes are still a staple but consider expanding the selection for those with a sweet tooth–we’re talking about a full dessert bar with everything from whoopie pies, truffles, cupcakes, candies and a chocolate fondue fountain.  The dessert bar can double as your wedding favor by setting up plastic bags or boxes for your guests to take a snack for the ride home.

10. Relax—seriously

Planning a wedding can be stressful but when the day arrives, everyone will have more fun if you can overlook any little mishaps (and there’s always SOMETHING that doesn’t go quite according to the plan) and let loose.  Think about it, do YOU have fun at parties where the host is constantly on edge?  To avoid sabotaging your good mood, assign any last minute details to a bridesmaid, relative or your wedding planner—and designate a friend who, if they observe you getting stressed, will ply you with a cocktail or TWO.
